About the National Wildlife Refuge

34,000-acre refuge set aside for migratory bird species, including songbirds, snow geese, and 27 species of ducks. A variety of wildlife may be observed, including raccoon, bobcat, muskrat, river otter, skunk, and opossum. American alligator reside at the refuge, as well. Spring and fall are the best times to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

In addition to birding and wildlife observation, the refuge provides opportunities for freshwater and saltwater fishing, hunting, boating, canoeing, and nature study. Three fishing piers and two boat ramps are located on the refuge. Boating is restricted to the designated boat canals on the refuge.




Location

The refuge’s Visitor Station is located approximately 1.5 hours east of Houston. Take FM 563 approximately two miles south of I-10 (exit 810).

Hours

The refuge’s main entrance is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year-round for day use activities. The refuge office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

The East Bay Bayou Tract is open 7 days a week from 6 AM to 7 PM for day use activities.

No overnight camping is permitted.

Fees

There is no entrance fee for the refuge.
