Alabama Creek Wildlife Management Area’s 14,561 acres are nestled in the Davy Crockett National Forest near the Neches River. Like all Wildlife Management Areas, the land remains largely undeveloped. Portions of the WMA are accessible via the Davy Crockett National Forest’s self-guided driving trail; various utility and public hunting roads provide additional access. Call the National Forest at (936)655-2299 before visiting to inquire about possible seasonal road closures.

Recreation activities at Alabama Creek WMA include: birding, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, primitive (tent) camping, nature study and wildlife observation. Anglers will find fishing opportunities in the Neches River and area ponds stocked with bass and catfish. Primitive (tent) camping is available year-round. During white-tailed deer hunting season, camping is restricted to designated campsites. Campers must pack in their own drinking water — potable water, restrooms, and other facilities are not available.

Many people are drawn to this “Piney Woods” region of Texas in the early Spring (March) to witness the annual dogwood bloom. If you visit during dogwood season, be sure to explore the Dogwood Trail self-guided driving tour — Forest Service Road 509. Wildlife viewing opportunities exist year-round and include white-tailed deer, Eastern fox squirrel and waterfowl.

The refuge is located southwest of Lufkin, west of the Neches River in Trinity County. From Lufkin take SH 94 approximately 13 miles to the intersection of FM 2262. Travel south on FM 2262 four miles.
