The Ten Essentials

The ten essentials are the minimum items every outdoors enthusiast should pack on every outing. While you may find you do not use some of these items often, nature can be unpredictable so it pays to be prepared.

The Top Ten

Essential gear

  1. Plenty of drinking water in a leakproof container, or a water filter
  2. Extra food
  3. Extra layers of clothing, including rain gear
  4. Map(s)
  5. Compass
  6. Flashlight with spare batteries/bulb
  7. First aid kit
  8. Waterproof matches
  9. Knife
  10. Sunglasses

Texas outdoors enthusiasts, particularly in South and Central Texas, should also consider carrying the following items:

  • Hat for sun protection
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent

Packing these items with you religiously on every outing is only one part of the equation, however. Before you go on an extended trip, visit a remote area, or venture out alone, be sure you know how to use each and every item correctly. A compass and map, for example, are useless if you cannot use them properly. Many books, clubs, and outdoor gear stores offer guidance and assistance if you should need any help.
