About the City Park

Morningstar Boardwalk of the Salado Creek Greenway

Located adjacent to the San Antonio International Airport (KSAT), McAllister Park is San Antonio's largest and most popular city park. Featuring over 25 miles of trails for area hiking, bicycling, mountain biking and running enthusiasts, McAllister Park is a gateway to the upper Salado Creek Greenway (opened July 2010.) Part of a growing network of picturesque trails accessible to all non-motorized modes of transportation, including bicycles, pedestrians and wheelchairs, the Salado Creek Greenway's McAllister Park Trailhead is located next to the new dog park.

Other activities include picnicking, birding, fishing, picnicking, wildlife observation and nature study. The park's athletic fields for team sports, including soccer and baseball, are leased by local organizations and are not available for reservations. Four group pavilions are available by reservation.

This is a day use only park. Camping is not permitted.

In early August 2010, Justin and I began riding the newly opened section of San Antonio's Salado Creek Greenway, starting at the McAllister Park trailhead. It is awesome -- dense woodlands and wetlands, scenic views from a hill overlooking the San Antonio International Airport, and a ride across the extremely beautiful Morningstar Boardwalk. The boardwalk is especially poignant because it:

"...honors Army Staff Sergeant Christopher Morningstar, a son of San Antonio and a soldier loved and respected by the troops he led. On February 5, 2006, in Al Husayniyah, Iraq, SSG Morningstar, 27, gave his life for his country and the democratic ideals he cherished."

While riding the Boardwalk, we observed great blue heron, great egret, and a large family of black-bellied whistling ducks.

Location

From Loop 410, drive 3.2 miles on U.S. Highway 281 to Bitters Road. Turn east on Bitters Road to the junction with Starcrest, then continue on Starcrest until Jones-Maltsberger Road; turn left on to Jones-Maltsberger and proceed 1 mile to the park entrance on the right at 13102 Jones-Maltsberger.
