About the National Recreation Area

Amistad National Recreation area is located near the Texas-Mexico border in Del Rio. The Amistad Reservoir covers 67,000-acres and includes 540 miles of shoreline on the U.S. side of the border. A portion of the Reservoir extends into Coahuila, Mexico.

While boating, fishing and other water-related activites -- such as SCUBA diving, swimming, tubing and waterskiing -- are especially popular, numerous outdoor activities are available. Opportunities exist for bicycling, birding, camping, hunting and picnicking. Wildlife observation is also popular, with opportunities to view javelina, white-tailed deer and Western diamondback rattlesnake.

Area Services

Location

Located on the Rio Grande River and Amistad Reservoir, 12 miles northwest of Del Rio in Val Verde County. A portion of the Reservoir extends into Coahuila, Mexico. To reach the Visitor Information Center, take Highway 90 west Del Rio and proceed about 5.5 miles west of the National Park Service (NPS) Headquarters to to Visitor Information Center entrance.
