The clear, inviting waters of the Guadalupe River, lined by lush woodlands and rugged limestone bluffs, make 1,938-acre Guadalupe River State Park a popular outdoor recreation area. Visitors to the park engage in a variety of outdoor activities, including swimming, tubing, tubing, canoeing, fishing, bicycling (on paved roads only), picnicking, camping and wildlife observation.

Approximately 3 miles of hiking trails parallel the river and connect to the various campgrounds. In late 2001, the park opened an additional 5.3 miles of trail for mixed-use (hiking, mountain biking and equestrian); the trailhead is located immediately to your right as you pass the park entrance station. Facilities are available for both primitive tent and developed (RV) camping; equestrian camping is not available. Wildlife includes raccoons, armadillos, white-tail deer, squirrels, mallard ducks, Guadalupe bass and numerous songbirds.

The Guadalupe River winds 250 miles through Texas and is the state's most heavily utilized recreational river. As one might imagine, the park is extremely popular during the sweltering summer months when a dip in the river is especially appealing. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, weekdays in the early morning or late evening are generally good any time of year. The hiking trail along the riverbank provides scenic and cypress-shaded views, and there are numerous picnic tables and grassy areas to sit down, relax and absorb the park's rugged beauty. Justin and I often see at least one armadillo, mallard duck, and Northern cardinal on our frequent visits to the park; best viewing times are, as always, in the early morning or late afternoon. White-tail deer are sometimes visible from Park Road 31.

Guided interpretive tours of adjacent 2,300-acre Honey Creek State Natural Area are held each Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. The 2-hour tour is quite interesting, and involves an easy 1.5-mile hike.
