About Planet Bike
In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo best taillight period   February 8, 2010
Oliver R. Byrd (HI United States)

Just needed to add one more five star review.

Look no further. This is the light to get.

While I'm not one to buy 500 lights and compare them all I believe that this is the brightest taillight on the market.

Drivers will NOT miss you but you may cause permanent retinal damage.

bought this paired with the 1/2 watt headlight. couldn't be happier

3 out of 5 stars Super Bright Light - Bad Mounting System   January 25, 2010
An Average Guy
I've had the same commuting setup since '03 and it was time for a light update. The various Internet forums said this is the favored light right now, so I bit.

The good:
This light is awesomely bright compared to my old Cateye blinky from '03! Plus it only takes 2 AAA batteries so no more trying to figure out what to do with that odd battery.

The bad:
The mount is horrible. I have racks/panniers and use an under-seat bag when just around town for the usual essentials (spare tube etc).

My old blinky just has a threaded hole to screw it to the rack. 30 sec and you're done. This unit has a click quick release, so it needs to be taken off the bike every time you stop or it will walk away.

To add insult to injury, the stock light doesn't even come with a mount suitable for a rack. That's a $5 extra option. Between my rack and my saddle bag, there is no suitable place to mount the light with the hardware provided.

This is bad design for an easy problem and the reason for my 3 stars. Planet Bike, please drill a hole in the unit for those of us that just want to mount the darn thing and not have some quick release system.

4 out of 5 stars A little expensive for what it is   January 23, 2010
Donald Autry (Athens, AL)
This thing is not near as bright as some of the other reviews would make you think. I don't believe it really is that attention getting in the daytime as some have claimed. It does work very well for night use, which is what is important. I think it should be cheaper, and if they mark it down to about half what they normally want I will buy another. That being said, it does what is intended. I feel a lot safer when i am on my ride home and the sun is setting. It also seems water tight, but I don't ride my bike in the rain.

2 out of 5 stars Effective but fails in snow/rain   January 4, 2010
Lazarus (USA)
The features are great - internal reflector, two low power LEDs and one 'high' power LED which does a good job for the batteries used. The lighting modes are also welcome and battery lifetime seems good (several months with perhaps 1 hour use per week day).

The bad: Well, it's not properly sealed. Snow can creep into the base and short out the connections where the 'button' switch is. The light will then fail until opened up and dried out. It's embarrasing riding along and suddenly realizing the rear light has failed - fortunately I had a cheap backup which is less effective BUT waterproof.

I have two of these (one for each bike) and they both display this problem. I haven't tried them in the rain yet but would not be surprised if this also causes issues.

5 out of 5 stars Best Light for Morning/Day/Night Visibility   December 22, 2009
S. YOUNG (Florida, USA)
If you want high visibility when you ride, this light is the best available. It's very bright and has a unique flash pattern that gets attention. It's built well and it is easy to attach and detach from the bike. The seat post clamp holds the light securely at any angle and doesn't slip over time. The on/off button is easy to find and switch when you are on or off the bike. I think you will see a most companies imitate this design because it is the most noticeable and compact combination available.
