Hot...not hot enough October 27, 2009 kmfnyc Slightly disappointed in this bottle. It's not as heavy as I thought it would be which is great. But, it doesn't keep liquids hot for the advertised 12 hours. I get about 3 1/2 hours before my coffee becomes cool. I do follow the instructions for preheating with boiling water, and the bottle remains cool to the touch which indicates that it is "working". But somewhat disappointed that it's not going to keep things hot all day. Though, the capacity isn't great enough to really need that (unless you want to make coffee/tea to drink AFTER work, for example). What I really needed is something to keep my coffee warm on marathon morning and the 3 1/2 hours limit will just make the cut from when I make my coffee until when I will drink it.
Heavy Duty--Cool Looking October 10, 2009 Eco Mama's Guide To Living Green Recently I took this thermos on an outing to a pumpkin farm. I knew it was going to be cold, so I brought along my Stanely Thermos. What a luxury! I got to have piping hot green tea in the middle of the pumpkin patch.
I have the .5qt classic Stanley thermal bottle, which is a lot more than it sounds like. At the pumpkin patch, I shared with a friend, drank plenty myself, and still had some left when I got home--still steaming hot about six hours later. They make bigger ones, but this is the perfect size to slip in a backpack. The thermos is well made and sturdy and looks very cool. Stanley thermoses have a hard core quality that I love, as though they could be run over by a truck and still be fine.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is that the lid, which also doubles as a cup, is lined with plastic. Why not just stainless steel? The rest of the thermos is stainless, however, and it is the nicest one I've seen, so I'm willing to over look it, but I do hope they re-think that part of the design.
I plan to take my thermos Trick or Treating, filled with spicy hot apple cider. This is the kind of thing that will last forever and really comes in handy. It's a great thing to have during Fall and Winter and would also make a great gift. Recommended.
Skeptical at first but quality is good. September 13, 2009 Jon Stewart (Portland, OR) Well, I research a ton before I buy almost anything. I read all these reviews on Amazon and was a little worried about the quality of this thermos because of the 'made in china' thing and what not, but think of it like this... Stanley is an American name and has been around for a long time. Yeah so they make sutff in China now... so does everybody else and I'm not the most excited about it but my little green stanley has been holding up for probably 6 months now (despite many drops on the concrete with dents and scratches)and it still keeps my coffee hot. I (actually my wife) makes coffee at 5:30 a.m. and it is currently 11:58 and I'm drinking my coffee right now and it's still hot enough for me to burn myself. That is with no preheating the thermos and with a lot of creamer in it too. I also did a test when I first bought the thermos. I preheated the thermos for 10 minutes with boiling water and then put boiling water (212 degrees in it at 10:00 p.m. The next morning at 6:00 (8 hours later) I checked the temperature and it was 186 degrees. (or maybe it was a 168 degrees, it's been a while so I forgot) Anyways, the point is, is that this thermos keeps stuff hot, IF it's not defective. If you have time go here to read how they work... http://home.howstuffworks.com/thermos.htm
ANY manufacturer has defective items that make it through manufacturing and if you get one, return it. Stanley has a great warranty. I've never used it so I don't know if it works cuz my product still works like new. If you're feeling heat on the outside of your bottle, then it's broken... get a new one.
Another thing to think about... how many of these does Stanley sell? I would guess A LOT!!! how many reviews are on here? Only a few. So... most people that get a good product don't race to the internet and write a review. If you get a poor product, you ARE likely to race to the internet and cry and complain over how awful your product is. So take THAT into consideration as well. Chances are you will NOT get a defective one.
I'm happy with my purchase.
Quality Update June 13, 2009 Fishychips (San Francisco, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered my .5 Qt. Stanley from Amazon June 2009 and have no heat retention problems. The hot liquid was still hot the morning after in a test run to make sure I got a good bottle. It is apparent that Stanley read these reviews, took them to heart and made manufacturing corrections which says a lot to me about their expectation and reputation. I am very happy with my purchase. Thank you Stanley.
no longer made in USA, no longer reliable May 11, 2009 yetanotherartist (Denver, CO USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought two of these, one in red and one in black. After reading a few of the reviews, I discovered that the quality control looked to be faulty - no thermos should leak perceptible heat. Once the red and the black thermos arrived, I put boiling water in both. These are both brand new. The red stayed cool. The black radiated intense amounts of heat. One has a vacuum, as promised - the other is nothing but a high-priced steel jar.
This is made in China - and obviously, Stanley has decided that Americans can't tell the difference between a working thermos and a flawed POS. Out of the two I bought, one is a flawed POS. The other is a thermos. Too bad they lost control or stopped caring about quality.
