SteriPEN Journey April 1, 2010 jr 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
We purchased this item and tested it once at home before going to China for 2 weeks. Seemed to work fine, but then it failed after our second use in China. We had brought a 2nd set of new batteries for backup, and these did not work at all. Had to find a 3rd set while in China, and these DID work with the SteriPEN, but I was constantly concerned that it would drain the batteries and fail again. We did not get sick, so I am fairly sure it is a good product in theory and it was easy to use, but if I ever needed to use one again, I would buy the Classic model even though it is heavier, because it uses traditional AA batteries and one could just take spare rechargeable ones with a wall recharger.
So far So Good March 18, 2010 Frank T. Steele (Phoenix, AZ USA) This replaces my pump filter which weighed 11oz. yes there are lighter version of Steripen in the line-up, but i like that this one has the LCD display and the rubber neck so that it fits perfectly in off the shelf bottleded water bottles.
get the Streamlight battery 12 pack here on Amazon and never look back.
Don't bother with the pre-filter, just use a coffee filter or bandanna.
dead on arrival November 28, 2009 Whimsy (pittsburgh, pa) 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
I purchased this product from Amazon. It arrived seemingly in great condition. I bought it to take with me on a trip to India.
I decided to test the product once here at home prior to my trip. I was unable to complete a single purification round because the batteries that shipped with the product died! After less than a single use!
That's when I first posted this review. I said: "Perhaps the company should take their own advice from the owner's manual and "Note that if you will be storing your STeiPEN Journey for a long period of time, it is best to remove the batteries from the device." It ships with the included batteries already in the device- which I assume (hope) contributed to their lack of power on arrival. I have ordered replacement batteries, at which time hopefully I can actually get to try out the device."
Well, I DID get a new pair of CR123 batteries. And I tried again. And again, it failed to work, saying the batteries were dead. Perhaps I have a faulty SteriPEN that just doesn't work at all? Perhaps SteriPEN just eats batteries. Unfortunately I have no other product that uses CR123 batteries, nor do I wish to spend more money buying a third set of batteries. Thumbs down so far from me.

Amazon's Retail Comparable Price is False August 31, 2009 Takes22Tango 1 out of 21 found this review helpful
This is more a review on Amazon and their claimed "retail price" and "discount"...they say the retail price is $130, but it is $99 at REI....which we all know is the true retail price. REI is pretty much the full price place. So why does Amazon say they are such a good deal when they aren't? Yes, they are indeed $15 less than REI/retail....but not $45 off retail. Surely Amazon has the ability and technology to update their % off retail and their retail price to reflect reality??????
