Product Description Providing everything needed for cleansing and purifying drinking water while camping, hiking, or traveling, this pack consists of a SteriPEN Classic handheld water purifier, a pre-filter for cleansing dirty water, a 32-ounce wide-mouth water bottle, a user's guide, and a nylon case for the water purifier. The water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 8 ounces with four AA, disposable batteries (not included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. Measuring 7.6 inches long, the purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. The pre-filter filters particulates and debris from water, making it ready for the water purifier. The water bottle has a cap for securing water after it's been purified.

Good Product August 25, 2009 M. Layman (Idaho) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Used it the first weekend that I had it. My wife and I went camping and the temp's soared to over 100 and we used it to purify a gallon of water from the river for more drinking water. Worked great and I think I'll take it with me to Mexico this year just in case.
You can't rely on SteriPEN, do not use it in the back country! June 28, 2009 Keith Airheart 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
VERY DISPLEASED! I and a backpacking friend purchased the SteriPEN System Pack. We were initially impressed with what we had read from the company, primarily with its weight. We were heading into the backcountry 7-8 days and wanted to save as much weight as possible. The one star I give SteriPEN is for its weight (especially with lithium batteries) and only that. The bottle caps leaked at multiple places, losing water when purifying and along my leg while hiking, nice. My friends quit working on the second use, the bulbs were defective or just very fragile. Mine ate through the batteries in three days (Duracell), so bring extras (more weight) if needed. If you have clear running water it tastes good, however any other type and SteriPEN leaves the tastes, discolor, smells and floaters. My pre-filter webbing tore away from its plastic frame by simply using it, this created more and larger floaters in the water, bugs etc. If you are truly relying on this for survival and must purify from the water sources you are using, if you drop this thing on a rock or even the ground it could break. The lamps are apparently fragile or my friend simply received a defective one. Going back to pumping water, I never had any problems with my pump and it is much faster. I can't take the chance again with this product; my life depends on the ability to have clean water on my explorations and especially extended adventures.
INCOMPLETE FIELD TRIAL AND A TOXIC BOTTLE December 16, 2008 J. Barber (bumfuct, california) 1 out of 25 found this review helpful
except to tell you that the plastic water bottle is constructed of poly carbonate(which has been declared to be toxic by several industrialized nations), it is not fair to myself, the vendor, the manufacturer, or to amazon, to offer up a review until i finish my "field trial"..
i purchased the steripen system for an upcoming trip to mexico, and i cannot, in good conscious, offer up a review until i return..
at this time, i would suggest that you purchase only the pen(without the polycarbonate bottle).. i have disposed of the bottle and will be using only the pen while in mexico.. after all, i bought the "system" to get rid of toxic material..
beleive you me, when i get back, i will let you know what i think..
hasta la vista

it is pretty good. October 30, 2008 Chien-sen Wang (taipei, taiwan) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
you have to press the button first, wait for the green light, then immerse the light tube into the water. Great for traveling to another country where the water condition is unknown.. and yah.. NIMH battery is a must or else you will be running through the alkaline batteries like there is no tomorrow... too bad they didn't provide it.
Worked for me October 24, 2008 Timothy (USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Took my SteriPEN for 8 days in the Smoky Mountains. It worked every time and must have done the job because there were no ill effects. Do use lithium batteries however.
For anyone having problems I found this at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Water%20Treatment/Ultraviolet/SteriPen/Owner%20Review%20by%20John%20Heubi/
I was able to determine that the extended outdoor use seemed to create too much humidity within the unit and caused this malfunction. The malfunction occurred with a much greater frequency during periods of extremely high humidity and periods of extended rain. I was able to "fool" the unit when I got a red light by waiting for the indicator light to stop blinking and then placing the unit in the water, just as if I were purifying the water. Then I would pull it out of the water, just as if I had completed the purification, then push the button again. The SteriPEN would then work just fine for any number of uses. I am certain that this would not even be an issue to anyone using the SteriPEN for weekend or week long treks. The problem also goes away after the unit is in a controlled environment (inside) for approximately 1-3 days to get a chance to get completely dried out.
