Product Description
Great for travel or an emergency-preparedness kit, this handheld water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 8 ounces with four AA, disposable batteries (not included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. The purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid.

No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 7.6 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and seems to work   November 13, 2009
White Wolf
We bought this purifier to carry on a trip to Turkey. We used it to purify tap water (which was likely potable anyway); we never tried using it on water that was untreated or from a suspicious source. The purifier is easy to use but the user needs to invest a few minutes reviewing the instruction sheet. We purchased bottled water and used the empties (either 0.5L or 1.0L) to hold the untreated water; it was easy to obtain a watertight seal between the bottle and the purifier.

We have been carrying a pump filter on backpacking trips for years. The SteriPen is lighter and more compact so it will replace the pump in our camping kit.

I took the Steripen with me on a Smokey Mountain hike. It operated as the manual stated it should. I didnt get sick. Either it worked or all the water I got was good in the first place. Who knows.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of gear   September 16, 2009
Australian Mountaineer
I bought my first SteriPEN Classic three years ago and have recently had to replace it because it was stolen in a French mountain hut. I do a good deal of walking and climbing in Australia and Nepal in areas where the water is of dubious quality. The SteriPEN enables me to use public water supplies with little risk of stomach problems. It treats water thoroughly with minimal effort on my part. Although it does not affect water bubbles on the side of my one litre bottle above the main water level, I simply fill the bottle to the top and treat slightly over one litre. This has not caused me any difficulties. Occasionally I filter obviously polluted water through a thin cloth before I treat it. Otherwise, the SteriPEN alone does the job. It uses standard AA batteries, which I prefer as I can buy them even in remote villages. A set of new lithium AAs has lasted me for fourteen days in temperatures from 10C to -25C, purifying about six litres a day, with power to spare. The SteriPEN claim that a set of batteries will treat 100l seems feasible to me. I thoroughly recommend the SteriPEN to anyone traveling to remote areas with poor water supplies.

5 out of 5 stars Great little device.   September 4, 2009

Have been traveling for a total of a year with this little device. Never got sick. Not needing cartridges is nice. Don't get the ones that take CR123A cells - how are you going to find those in Uzbekistan?

Some tips, no particular order:
1. Buy one large silk neckerchief, 2 Nalgene HDPE *narrowmouth* bottles, 4 high-capacity AA NiMH eneloop batteries, and a wall charger. The neckerchief is your filter for "floaty stuff" and the Steripen snaps into the mouth of the Nalgenes like it was made for it, providing a watertight seal. Shake instead of stir, and no spilled water! Buy all this and never have to find bottled water in rural China again!
2. Dry it thoroughly before storing! Otherwise you'll get scale (limestone) buildup between the sensor electrodes and the pen will refuse to start.
3. With NiMH 2500mAh batteries, you can purify about 40 liters before a recharge.
4. Note that the Steripen DOES NOT remove harmful chemicals like oil or gasoline from water! To fill your water bottle safely from a source with oil or other petrochemicals floating on the top, submerge the CAPPED bottle first under the water, open the bottle underwater to fill, and cap the bottle underwater and bring it back out. Old Army trick.
5. Locals by the watering holes in Africa will wonder what the hell you are doing. And it's completely impossible to pantomime what the Steripen does. :)
6. Bring iodine tablets as a backup. Though it works well, it's electronic and can break.
