Product Description The Katadyn Pocket Filter is a durable water filter with an aluminum shell. The ceramic element in the Katadyn Pocket Filter will treat up to 13,000 gallons. Compare that to most other water filters out there and you'll see why Katadyn is one of the most respected brands in the industry. This ceramic water filter offers 0.2 micron filtration and a flow rate of up to 1 liter per minute. At 20oz, the Katadyn Pocket Filter isn't the lightest filter in the world but it's still quite compact and its rugged aluminum shell means it'll go the long haul. This is why it's standard issue for international Red Cross field workers. The Katadyn Pocket Filter will remove all giardia, fungi, parasites, cholera, typhoid, cryptosporidia, salmonella and other harmful bacteria, parasites, and germs. This filter will last you a long time if you expect to be in places where supplies (i.e. replacement filters) are not readily available. INCLUDES: Pump, filter, input hose (40") with acorn pre-filter and floa

Katdyn for life! November 22, 2009 K. Miller (Arlington, VA USA) Amazing filter. Solid construction, takes a beating and just keeps pumping. It's a tool so it does take some care and feeding on occasion but I expect I'll be using this filter for 20 years... it's just that solid.
Great water filter October 27, 2009 Gilles Bizien (France) High quality item! the best portable water filter in the market...bottom line.
Very good service!since the item was delivered within one week in France...what else can i say?
I wish more products could be purchased from France since Amazon.com offers outstanding bargains.
Will surely order other products from Amazon
Thanks
Katadyn Pocket is the last filter you will ever buy October 19, 2009 Christian L. Franken (St. Paul, MN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I previously owned a Katadyn Hiker Pro Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter and a Katadyn VarioKatadyn Vario Multi Flow Water Microfilter. Both had small plastic parts break in the middle of extended wilderness trips. For the Hiker, the input barb broke off and for the Vario the pump axis broke. I cannot say that I am hard on my equipment but tools that are made for the outdoors should withstand the occasional bump. Fortunately, the vendor took both itmes back for a full refund.
I decided to invest a bit more in a filter that I would not have to worry about and sprang for the Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter. I am not disappointed with my purchase. I only had a chance to use it once so far, but I can tell that it performs beautifully. All parts that could possibly break are either stainless steel. It is about three times as expensive as the Vario, but from the fact sheet you should get 25 times the filter capacity (2,000 liters for Vario vs. 50,000 liters for the Pocket). It should pay for itself!
Last but not least: I really liked the ergonomics of the Vario, especially with a plastic bottle attached to the bottom. I find the Pocket even better, works like an oldfashioned bicycle pump.
Conclusion: this will be the last filter I will have to buy.

My first cheaper, lighter, pump filter cracked on the second day of a week of backpacking on Isle Royale Natl. Park - which has cysts among other biologicals in the water. It was the first time I ever used it after testing it with tap water at home. More pressurized, UNfiltered water sprayed out the crack than into my canteen. Filling a canteen took forever, but it could have been much worse if it didn't filter at all. Carrying fuel for boiling was out of the question. Buy this Katadyn and never worry about your drinking water again. How much is NOT having intestinal distress worth when you are on vacation and far from medical care or meds? THe Red Cross has used them to filter water in Africa for sixty years with no failures. Save your pack weight somewhere else, the extra pound that this filter weighs is well worth the assurance of safe water it affords. Filter your water from the top of the source to avoid the bottom sediment and it will last for generations. This filter is so reliable that you don't need to carry a backup unless you are absent minded and likely to leave it by the stream after filling your canteen. I have the decades old, white model, but it still works like new.

I've tried (and broken) numerous different water filters. I consider myself very gentle with my equipment but lately I've broken my fair share of "plastic" filters. I won't "name names" but these were name brand filters... I finally abandoned my quest for the uber-light and got a Pocket Filter. I could not be happier with my decision. The Pocket worked great, every time. My husband and I just finished a month-long trek in the high Sierra's and never worried once about whether our water filter was going to work or not. While on the trail, we spoke with numerous other hikers who broke their "plastic" filters too and were resorting to purification pills as a back-up. We told them to get a Pocket. The Pocket was easy to use, easier to maintain and solid as a rock. Do not let the weight of this filter dissuade you - you will be glad to have this filter when it really counts.
