one of the best August 2, 2009 ^**^ (new england) This informative book reads more like a novel than data source...but it is very informative. The authors simply chose a story telling format for this book. I really enjoy reading this book and hearing about the authors experiences involving things and ideas of the back country. If you need info on something in a hurry and don't feel like a long read just use the index.
Complete and Wonderfully Written July 12, 2009 John Opincar (Katy, TX USA) I'm sure there are plenty of books out there that offer similar content. But I doubt any could match the wonderful style in which this book is written. In addition to providing a wealth of practical knowledge, this book was a joy to read.
A real classic June 20, 2009 Thomas J. Trebisky (Tucson, Arizona USA) I have enjoyed this book so much, I just have to write a review and recommend it to others. I am eagerly pursuing ultralight backpacking and revising everything about how I do things. Gearwise this book barely touches on this now and then. This does not in any way detract from the book! Both of these guys have loads of experience, superb writing styles, and offer a lot for anyone, whether they are beginners or have been in the outdoors for years. They live in the same world I have lived in for years and tell it plain and straight. There are treasures of humor and wisdom on almost every page. Highly recommended!
There's better February 2, 2009 A. Macbeth 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I didn't like this book. Yes, it has lots of info. But I don't like to presentation. The two authors each provide their own commentary on each topic throughout the book. You first read Colin's outdated discussion on a given topic, then you get Chip's viewpoint. The authors clearly have extensive experience with all versions of equipment. But they fall short in making a simple recommendation. For example, the discussion on rain gear describes the various options and materials, but then doesn't conclude with a "And I use one this because...". The book is very wordy, and I found myself skimming over all the blah, blah, blah, in hopes of finding something useful. In the same purchase, I bought "Lightweight Backpacking and Camping", by Ryan Jordan, which I highly recommend.
Everything you wanted to know about gear and then some December 7, 2008 Carol Corbridge (Talent, OR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read this when I re-discovered backpacking in my 40's. It got me up to speed on the latest fabrics, styles, weights, ideas, etc. It's an exhaustive look at gear. And I mean that in a good way. I never thought there was so much to know. I found it fascinating. Read this and you'll have a good understanding of what's out there. This started me on the road to purchasing my outfit. I read many other books after this; notably Beyond Backpacking: Ray Jardines Guide to Lightweight Hiking. Ray Jardine's book is a good follow up because it looks at the lightweight revolution, in fact Ray started it. But I would recommend reading Flectcher's book first as a strong foundation for any other readings.
