About Kelty
Kelty has been building affordable, reliable outdoor gear since 1952, helping everyone--from the first-time camper to the experienced mountaineer--embrace the outdoor experience with confidence. Dick Kelty launched the company after years of making backpacks in his home or garage for friends, hand forming and welding each of the frames while his wife sewed the pack bags. The original Kelty packs included aircraft-aluminum contoured frames, padded shoulder straps, waist belts, clevis-pin attachments, nylon pack cloth, zippered pockets, and hold-open frames. Dick Kelty quit his carpentry business in 1956 to focus full time on Kelty Packs, and turned an old Glendale, California, barbershop into his first retail store and factory. In the ensuring years, Kelty expanded its product line to include daypacks, luggage, waterproof clothing, child carriers, jogging strollers, and more.

4 out of 5 stars great carrier   November 15, 2009
Myszka (Blacksburg,VA)
We enjoyed this carrier and so did our baby . It's comfortable and adjustable so your back won't hurt..... I gave it 4 stars because the side of that backpack didn't really support her head when she fell asleep in it. I had to roll my sweater and put it inside the carrier and actually hold it because while we were hiking her head just moved from side to side. It's not a big deal and I'm still really happy with it and I would recommend it for anyone -- just make sure that you go hiking when your baby is not ready for nap =)

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice!   November 8, 2009

This is a very comfortable carrier for my wife, daughter and myself. We were using an Ergobaby for the first 2 years and she finally got to the point where she was uncomfortable ("let's go back home!") because she was too big/squeezed/hot on my back. The Kelty is framed, allowing her to sit in a supportive, defined space and allows me to comfortably carry her and some small day items (water, diaper, snacks, etc). The frame keeps me off her back and keeps her from getting sweaty. The carrier is deceptively light given its size and folds down nicely for transport. We just leave it open and ready in our house and I can have my daughter (2.5 years, 32 lbs) in it and on my back in 2-3 minutes. The stand is awesome to keep the pack upright while I put her in safely and closes into the frame when you put on the shoulder. We are thinking about getting another one for our 4 month old....

1 out of 5 stars Do not disregard the previously mentioned flaw   October 31, 2009

In researching which carrier was best to buy, I saw that this product received a large number of five and four star reviews. Unfortunately I disregarded the reviewers who noted that the adjustment rail didn't work. Within five minutes of walking with the pack, the pack begins to slide down the adjustment rail. So unless you are over 6 feet and don't need to adjust the pack, you should be very wary about this product. I had hoped/assumed that the flaw would have been ironed out by the time I ordered one, but that wasn't the case. I am in the midst of trying to return it, but even if Kelty goes ahead and send me one that works, I will still have had to go through the hassle of having to package it up and ship it to them. You expect more when you pay $200 for something. Did they not test this before they put it up for sale? Can I assume the five-star reviewers didn't experience this problem?

3 out of 5 stars Functional, not Comfortable.   September 28, 2009
Sherpa (Tampa, FL)
We bought this pack to bring our 1 year old along on our hiking trips. He's 25lbs and the pack had enough adjustment in it to make him comfortable, and I expect him to be able to fit in it for at least another year or two. We put in about 50 miles of hiking on a recent trip to Yellowstone, and he was often asleep in the carrier while Mom an I were huffing and puffing up mountain sides.
I, however, did not experience the same level of comfort as my son did. I'm not sure if it was a function of my size (I'm 6'3", athletic build) or something else, but I could not get the pack well situated on my back. The shoulder straps were not long enough to be properly adjusted to my torso length, and the hip belt became very uncomfortable and painful after a few hours. I do not have this problem with my large capacity, multi day backpack. Also, the child's seating position puts his weight far off my back, although I'm not sure there is anything to be done about that ... I found myself really looking forward to the end of the days to get this pack off my back. My hips hurt so much that I found myself cinching down on the shoulder straps to throw more weight on my shoulders. By day's end I had sore hips AND shoulders!
Other than the fit issue, the Kelty pack very well thought out and functional.

5 out of 5 stars great for my 8 month old!   July 11, 2009

arrived 3 days Less then the estimated delivery date stated! My baby fits perfectly and loves riding with the sun/rain shade on! He is one to kick his socks off so an enclosed bottom collects anything he drops. great padding. feels weightless. a lot of adjustment straps will Ensure a good fit. i started with everything large/loose and figured out my fit perfectly one notch at a time. Since there are going to be 2 of us using the backpack, I took a whiteout marker and marked my preferred Holes to make the switching easier! wonderfully padded for baby and even has a drool guard!
